External timber frame repair with traditional jointing and resin reinforcement

External timber frame repair with traditional jointing and resin reinforcement

Trace Heritage and Restoration completed external timber frame repairs at King Henry in Rotherham, including splice repairs, replacement timbers, mortice and tenon jointing, resin bonded reinforcement and wall panel reinstatement.

The challenge

The external timber frame required repair to decayed or weakened façade elements, alongside wall panel rebuilds and render reinstatement. The works needed to respect the original timber frame construction while improving strength at vulnerable joints.

The approach

Trace used traditional splice and replacement methods with mortice and tenon jointing to match the original timber frame approach. Where additional reinforcement was required, embedded rods were resin bonded at joints to improve structural performance.

Wall panels were rebuilt using lime mortar, with render reinstated to complete the façade repair.

The solution

The works combined traditional timber frame repair with discreet modern reinforcement. This allowed the structure to retain its historic jointing principles while strengthening areas where additional support was needed.

The result

King Henry’s external timber façade was repaired and reinstated, combining traditional craft, lime-based wall panel repair and concealed resin bonded reinforcement.
