Timber decay surveys

Timber decay can be difficult to assess without the right expertise. Initial surveys are often limited to accessible areas, so we identify whether further exposure, opening-up works or testing may be needed to confirm the true condition of the timber before repairs are specified.

Diagnosis and treatment advice

A sound understanding of wood-decaying fungi and insect attack is essential. Evidence of wood-boring insects does not always mean treatment is required, so correct identification is vital before recommending any remedial action.

In the UK we have a small range of historical repair methods in use today by building contractors, who largely prefer to rip out the entire original timber and replace it with steel. Repairs can allow much of the original timbers to be retained, often only decayed at bearing ends or joints.
