Ashton Bath Timber Repair

Trace Heritage and Restoration carried out extensive timber roof structure repairs at Ashton Old Baths, including historic truss repair, splice and resin combination repairs, metal plate reinforcement and new timber construction.

The challenge

The historic roof structure required a broad range of repairs across trusses, purlins, joists and beams. Some members could be retained and reinforced, while others required replacement or new construction.

The project required a careful balance between preserving original structural timber and introducing new reinforcement where needed.

The approach

Trace used a combination of traditional splice repairs, resin repair techniques and metal plate reinforcement. This allowed original truss members to be retained where practical, while strengthening areas affected by decay, movement or structural weakness.

New truss construction, purlin reinforcement and joist and beam repairs were also completed as part of the wider roof structure works.

The solution

The repair strategy combined conservation-led timber repair with modern structural strengthening. Original elements were retained where possible, reinforced where appropriate and replaced only where necessary.

The result

The historic roof structure at Ashton Old Baths was repaired and reinforced, protecting the building’s original character while improving the performance of key structural timber members.
